20 Tips & Money Hacks to Improve Your Finances

The saving money hacks were held earlier in the week. I thought it would be fun for me to do the same thing with finances. There are ways to fool yourself, get around obstacles, boost your accounts without hurting.

It’s a good idea to improve your financial health. I think it’s important to share what has worked for me.

I am in the best financial position of my life, despite quitting my job and my wife quitting hers. Many of this is due to you, the readers. But it’s also because I am frugal, have eliminated debt, and saved as much as possible. These money hacks are my thanks. Here are some money saving tips and tricks to help you improve your budget.

1. Use cash. Cash is better for saving habits than debit or credit cards. It can be used for all non-bill purchases such as gas, food, and dining out. Cash spending makes spending seem more real. You can also know when you are running out of cash so you don’t spend more.

2. Weekly savings transfers. This idea was suggested by Trent, a friend at The Simple Dollar. He automatically deducts $20 per week from his weekly check to save. I decided $40/week was enough for me. It’s a small amount that I barely notice and it helps me save $2,000 per year, on top of my larger biweekly savings transfers.

3. Stay at home. You are more likely to go out and spend unnecessary money. Restaurants, shopping malls, and gas stations are all options. When you’re traveling, it’s difficult to stop spending. Instead, you should stay at home and enjoy free entertainment. It is also a great way for your family to bond. These are free money hacks and saving your money.

4. Don’t get catalogs. You may also receive emailed notifications from companies trying to sell you stuff. It’s tempting to purchase something you don’t need because of their sales announcements or new products. Stop the emails and catalogs from reaching you, and you will spend less.

5. Make a list for 30 days. You can put anything you feel the need to buy on your 30-day list. The only thing you can buy is necessities. Everything else, along with the date it was added to the list, goes on the list. You can purchase it after the 30 day period is up. However, most likely the strong desire to buy it will have passed and you can assess it calmly.

6. Cook at home. It seems harder than going out to eat. It doesn’t have to be difficult. A quick stir-fry can be made with frozen vegetables and either boneless chicken, or my favorite tofu with soy or tamari. You can make your own pizza using a pre-made crust, sauce, cheese, and vegetables. Add some spices to something, and bake it while you make brown rice. This is cheaper than ordering take-out, and it’s also healthier.

7. Exercise. It is important to be healthy in order to avoid expensive medical bills later.

8. Use the envelope method. This is the same concept as spending cash, but you can use envelopes to divide your spending cash into different categories. Non-bills are grocery, gas, and miscellaneous. I have three envelopes and, when they are empty, my allotment is spent.

9. Talk to your SO weekly. It is crucial to communicate with your partner. The financial goals you share should be aligned. From there, you can agree on a spending plan and an impulse buying policy that will not cause one of you to want to buy more than you need. You should both be aware of what bills you have paid and what your balances are. This can be accomplished in a weekly meeting that lasts only 20 minutes. Communication is essential.

10. The spreadsheet tracker hack. You can do incredible things with your financial data using expensive programs such as Quicken and MS Money. You can even find free programs online or on your desktop that does everything. The problem is that I don’t really need all of these. I just want a simple way to track my money, without any extra bells and whistles. I also want an online way to access it so I can see it from anywhere. Google Spreadsheets and Google Docs are the best ways to accomplish this. To track my bank accounts, I created a simple spreadsheet that does all the same things as MS Money. It includes the date, title, amount, memos, and a running balance. What else do you need? Keep it simple. Update – View the sample I posted online.

11. Make sure you have savings and your debt under control. Pay your bills first. I do mine all online. You’ll end up often shortchanging them if they are not paid first. But if you pay them off first, you’ll make sure you still pay your rent or mortgage, utilities, groceries, and gas… so you’ll deduct other expenses. he is the best daily money-saving tip.

12. Exercise at your home. It’s fine if you disagree with me. Everyone should do their best for themselves. However, I have saved a lot of money by running on the local track or the streets in my area and purchasing simple weights and a bar for chin-ups. Pushups and Hindu squats are my favorite body-weight exercises. I also do lunges, pushups (pullups), pullups, dips, and lunges. These exercises don’t require a gym. 13. Get rid of cable TV. But I don’t think I do. I watch DVDs so that I know what I’m seeing is great and not just the mediocre stuff on TV. You can find a lot of it online if you search. It’s not a lot of savings, but it adds to the total.

14. Declutter. You will make your life easier and more peaceful by getting rid of unnecessary things. Once you simplify your home, you won’t be able to go back.

15. Borrow or lend. Your family and friends can give you books, clothes, and toys that they don’t use anymore. Send an email to ask if anyone has it. If they don’t have it, chances are they will give it to someone else for free.

16. Barter. Although it’s an old art, many people will trade their goods or services for money. This is especially true if you are friends with each other. Bartering is the best way to save money. Bartering allowed me to save over $1,000 on my website design.

17. Use Online Savings. I use Emigrant. However, INGDirect is also very popular. There are many other online banks. You can earn twice as much interest as a regular bank savings account. However, if you don’t have an ATM account it is not as easy to withdraw cash. This makes it less likely you’ll be able to get money on impulse.

18. Use Frugal Gift-giving. It is a wonderful tradition to give gifts to others. It will remain so until it is commercialized. It will then be really, really expensive. Spend time with your loved ones instead. Give them something that you made or baked. Give them something they will appreciate. You don’t need to spend a lot of money to be generous.

19. Teach your children about advertising, saving, and earning. If you have children, teaching them money skills will help you save a lot of money over the long term. They will be less likely to ask for (OK, plead and beg) for the latest fad toys if they are aware of how advertising affects them in difficult ways. They will respect your money and the effort you make to save it if they are educated about how to save and earn money. They won’t want to buy expensive gifts if they understand that gift-giving doesn’t have to involve spending lots of money. it is a great trick to making money.

20. Happiness is not about spending. People often buy things because they believe they will bring happiness. They simply have to own the latest gadgets, shoes, or cars. It’s so much fun! But you only feel happy for a few days after you purchase that stuff. You can always buy more. It’s a never-ending circle. Instead, embrace life and love it. Look for the joy in the natural world!
