How to Reset Mac Password?

We’ll now look at the process of resetting MacBook passwords. There are a variety of methods for doing it.

1. Reset Mac password with Apple Account

The simplest way to do this is to reset your password using an Apple Account. Unfortunately, this approach did not work for me since it only works if your Mac is connected to an Apple Account. Also, before my vacation, I had signed off of my Apple Account just to be extra careful. Afterward, I tried the procedure using “forgetting” my Mac password again, and I can assure you it works flawlessly.

• Enter your username at the Mac’s login screen. After entering 3 wrong passwords, the Mac will show an option to reset the password.
• Click Reset using your Apple Account.
• You must wait until your Mac restarts.
• Enter the Apple Account and password to continue.
• Enter your username, then select Next.
• Create a new password, then select Next.
• After that, click Restart to finish the recovery process.

You can access your Mac using the new password. But what happens if you can’t remember Mac password after trying some attempts? The additional recovery options can help. Apple allows users to recover contacts and recovery keys to make it easier to reset Mac passwords.

2. Use a Password Hint

When you reset Mac password, be sure to check that the hint to your password is in your memory. The hint is the phrase you entered relating to the password when you set the password. It is activated after you have made 3 wrong password attempts:

• At the login screen, select the account that you’re being locked out of.
• Click the password field and enter the wrong password 3 times.
• The password hint should be visible, as you made it available when you created your account.

The screen will shake every time you press Return, and the third shake will generate the password hint that appears under the Password field. This may trigger a flash of inspiration, allowing you to remember your login and thus bringing an end to the password perils.

Sometimes, however, the hint does not show up. It’s because your Mac was not set up to display password hint suggestions inside your Login Options – only modified when you log onto your Mac. However, there are many other options to find your password.

3. Reset Mac Password from Another Admin Account

If you do have to share your Mac with another person who has an account of their own that you have access to, you can use their login to reset Mac password. If you’ve got another account on the Mac which you know the password for be able to access, you can reset your Mac administrator password using these steps:

• Navigate to Apple’s main Apple menu (Apple logo on top left) and click Log Out.
• Select the other account and then enter the password.
• Open System Settings > Users & Groups.
• Select the account with a missing password.
• Click the I icon > Change.
• Enter your Old Password, New Password, Verify Password, and Hint fields.
• Click Change Password.

The account password has been changed, allowing users to log in using their new password. But this won’t alter the password used for Keychain Access (macOS’s password management system is now operable with the Passwords application). It will be asked every time you log in to change the keychain password. You’ll need to input the forgotten password and select “Create A New Keychain.’

This poses a problem since if the user isn’t registered as the Admin, they will not be able to reset Mac password on your behalf. Fortunately, there is another way to recover your password.

4. Reset Mac Password Using Recovery Mode

Apple offers a tool to reset Mac password using all the steps previously taken. This is the ideal solution if you do not have a password hint and can’t log in with an alternative account, or forgot macbook password.

We explore steps on how to recover Macbook password using recovery mode:

For Intel-based Mac:

• Go to the Apple menu and select Restart.
• Now press Command+R and hold it for a second.
• Do not release the keys until you hear the Mac’s startup sound or when the Apple logo appears.

To Mac using Apple silicon:

• To turn on your Mac, Press and hold the Power button.
• Press it until you can see an option to start.
• Click on the gears symbol (Options) and press Continue.

You might be asked to choose the user you want to sign in with the administrator password. Follow the instructions on screen and then click Next, following any actions you take.

After that, the Mac will start in recovery mode. Once you notice the load bar appearing, you can release the keyboard. The next step is to select “Disk Utility and then click Continue. Follow these steps:

• Go to Utilities > Terminal.
• Enter resetpassword and hit Return.
• Choose the primary hard drive as the main.
• Choose your User Account (the one you’d like to switch).
• Enter a new password, and then create a password hint.
• Click Save: a warning message will be displayed that your Keychain Password hasn’t changed. Click OK.
  Shut down your Mac and restart it. Then, you can log in using your new password.

5. Reset Mac password using FileVault recovery key

It’s difficult to remember, but when you turned on FileVault to secure your data, you would have received a recovery key created by your Mac. Also, if you’re working with a MacBook, contact your IT department. They may possess the key. This key will allow you to change Mac password in a few steps.

• Start your Mac.
• On the login screen, click on the? icon beside the area for entering passwords.
• Choose Reset by using your recovery key.
• Enter the recovery key, then press Next.
• Change your password by following the instructions on screen.
• Restart your Mac and use your new password to sign in to your account.

6. Recover Files Using Target Disk Mode

If nothing else works, Target Disk Mode can help you recover if you have lost your Mac password. With another Mac, you can connect to the drive of that lost Mac and save any needed data.

For an Intel-based Mac:

• Close the Mac.
• Connect to a different Mac via a FireWire or Thunderbolt cable.
• Start on your Mac and hold down the T key as it loads.
• This will activate Target Disk Mode.

For the Mac with Apple silicon:

• Boot into the recovery mode following the steps above.
• Select Utilities > Share Disk.
• Select the disk or volume you would like to share. Share it.
• The hard drive of the lost Mac will now be visible, allowing you to restore and transfer the desired files to your new Mac.

How to Protect Your Mac from Unauthorized Password Resets

Since recovery mode offers a handy way to reset Mac password, you might be apprehensive that someone might hack into your Mac. If you have access to your Mac the majority of the time, you lose device control. Therefore, there are ways to avoid this from occurring.

The best method to secure your data is to enable FileVault encryption. It means that Password Reset is not available until you activate it. The Password Reset option won’t become accessible until you unlock it with Disk Utility. To activate it and configure it:

• Choose Apple > System Settings > Privacy & Security.
• Find your FileVault pane.
• Click Turn On FileVault.

After completing the process, you’ll receive a Recovery Key and a password that you must keep in mind. If you forget this information, the data will not be recoverable and will remain lost forever.
