10 Easy Tips to Stay More Active in Life

10 Easy Tips to Stay More Active in Life

Since I can remember, inactivity has been my defining characteristic. I have been guilty of everything, from faking injuries in gym class to getting winded after climbing one flight of stairs. The thorn in the side of my soul has always been finding ways to be more active in life and, you know what? actually using them.

If you are like me and feel the need to take a break after watching someone else jog by you, you should start slowly and build up to more challenging workouts. You won’t be able to walk if you push yourself too hard at the beginning.

Here are 10 simple ways I use to stay active without fail. You’ll be amazed at how much happier you feel if you are mindful of all the little things that you can do every day to make your daily tasks a mini-workout.

1. Go for walks.

To increase your motivation, you can put in incentives if you are already feeling discouraged. I don’t subscribe to magazines anymore. I just walk to the corner shop to get the latest issues. It is also a good idea to create a buddy system. Instead of inviting your friend over for tea, take it with you on a daily walk and bond. Talking will distract from the exercise.

2. Take the stairs.

This is obvious, but how often do you use the elevator instead? You can burn up to 150 calories by climbing five minutes per step! It helps your routine to be more active in life.

3. Clean vigorously.

This guy was not very tidy. I lived with him once. It was frustrating at the time but I learned later that a thorough tidying session can burn as much as 200 calories an hour. Sloppy Slopperson, I’m sorry.

4. Use a basket instead of a shopping cart.

A basket is better than a cart if you have only a handful of items to grab after work. This is a great way to weightlift (and it’s a good workout if you’re spontaneous like me, too).

5. Park further away.

You can add walking to your daily routine by parking farther away from your destination. You’ll burn calories and save time waiting for a spot closer to your destination, considering how packed parking lots can be.

6. Play with your pets.

Owning a dog means you have to take your dog for walks every day. You can tie a ribbon/string around the wrist of a cat lover who wants to let their cat snooze on the floor. Your cat will chase you around as you clean up or do any other chores that require a lot of movement. This is how I began to do it with my cat. He’s now obsessed! He takes it upon himself now to drag the ribbon to me – and, as any cat lover will know, he does this almost immediately.

7. Pace/clean while on the phone.

My family and I usually talk on the phone for at least an hour. Now, I vigorously pace around the house while we talk (usually with a ribbon tied around my wrist), or I put on my headset and keep my hands free to tidy up for a tidy session.

8. Set an alarm.

Writing is my constant hobby. I often forget how much time I have been sitting down for.It seems like hours have gone by in a flash. You can set an alarm for each hour so that you remind yourself to get up every hour for at least two minutes of stretching and walking. Break Pal is a program that appears on your screen every half an hour and offers a three-minute routine.

9. Exercise while watching TV.

Although I should be telling you to reduce your television viewing, that would make me a hypocrite. Nobodydaresinterrupt my shows! There is no law that says you can’t do anything while you’re watching them.

10. Support a good cause.

Sponsor charity runs or walks for causes that are dear to you. As a motivator to train, dedicate each charity run/walk to someone you care about.
