How To Create a Resume to Work in Blockchain Technology

Blockchain technology has dramatically changed the digital world, as it’s used to create digital currencies, monitor supply chains, and support secure transactions. Savvy business owners understand that they can benefit tremendously from implementing blockchain technology, which is why blockchain technology experts are in high demand.

But, in order to show a potential employer that you are the right blockchain expert for the job, you’ll need a strong resume. This article will cover four tips to help you create a compelling resume that will boost your chances of scoring interviews and ultimately help you get hired for your dream role.

Use a Chronological or Combination Resume Format

First, opt for either a chronological or a combination resume format to clearly organize your resume information. If you have plenty of experience working in the industry already, a chronological resume will likely be your best bet. On the other hand, if you have the less professional experience to list but plenty of applicable skills, you may want to opt for a combination resume format.

With a chronological resume, your work experience is typically the first main section, followed by your education, skills, certifications, and any optional resume sections that you want to include. List the entries in each section in reverse chronological order with the current or most recent item first, working backward in time from there.

A combination resume uses elements of both the chronological and functional resume formats, and it allows you to showcase your skills and abilities more prominently than your work experience. This can be useful if you have worked freelance roles, as you can highlight the various projects that you’ve worked on and the skills you’ve honed with each, rather than listing a single freelance entry in your work experience section.

Regardless of which resume type you choose, be sure to use consistent formatting throughout. Use headings and subheadings to break up the sections, and bullet points to ensure that your resume is easily scannable.

Start With a Strong Resume Summary or Objective

Begin your resume with a powerful summary or objective statement to capture the hiring manager’s attention and convince them to keep reading the rest of your resume. Use a resume summary if you have a significant amount of experience or a resume objective if you have less experience. Either way, this section should be placed immediately below your resume header so it’s the first thing that a reader will see.

This is your first chance to stand out to the hiring manager, so your introductory section should include your most impressive experience, skills, certifications, characteristics, and accomplishments. Whenever possible, use numbers and data to quantify your information, such as how many years of experience you have with blockchain technologies, how many different projects you’ve worked on, how many programmers you have supervised, and so forth.

Highlight Hard and Soft Skills

Working with blockchain technology obviously requires many different types of technical skills (also called hard skills), but it’s important to highlight your soft skills on your resume as well. Hard skills are generally job-specific, and they are easier to teach, learn, and assess. Conversely, soft skills are usually not specific to any one job or industry, and they are more difficult to define, learn, and measure.

As someone who works in blockchain technology, your hard skills might include things like databases, cloud platforms, Ethereum tools, product testing, debugging, blockchain security and architecture, cryptocurrency, decentralized technologies, Git/Github, software development, coding languages, customer support, encryption, and so forth.

Your soft skills may include things like leadership, management, adaptability, self-motivation, teamwork, mentoring, planning, analysis, creativity, problem-solving, and so on.

Many employers are increasingly looking to hire candidates with strong soft skills since it’s easier to teach someone a new method of product testing than it is to teach someone how to be an effective leader. Of course, in such a tech-based industry, hard skills are going to be very important. However, if you and another candidate have similar levels of experience and comparable hard skills but you have superior soft skills, you will have a significant edge over the other applicant.

Tailor Your Resume

Finally, be sure to tailor your resume to each position that you apply for. It can be tempting to use a generic resume for all of your applications, but taking the time to tailor your resume can substantially boost your chances of being called for an interview. It shows that you spent the extra time to read the job posting carefully and adjust your resume accordingly and that you respect the job application process as well as the hiring manager’s time.

To tailor your resume, start by mentioning the job title and the company that you are applying to by name in your resume summary or objective. Next, re-read the job posting carefully and identify the specific words and phrases that the employer uses to describe what they are looking for in a candidate. Then mirror this language in your resume, addressing as many points as possible to show that you are the best fit for the job.

For example, if the employer mentions that they are looking for someone who has experience with AWS, Azure, SQL, and MySQL, mention each of these things specifically in your resume rather than saying you have experience with multiple cloud platforms and databases. This will help your resume pass automated applicant tracking system scans and make it clear that you are attentive to detail and qualified for the position.
