From local non-profits to multinational conglomerates, the role played by IT professionals is critical to running modern operations. As a result, IT professionals are some of the highest-paid employees in the world.

While the typical IT professional’s pocketbook might be in great shape, the same can’t always be said for their personal health and wellness. In reality, those employed in key IT positions work long hours in front of their computers. That leaves little time to focus on diet, exercise, and outstanding medical concerns.

The good news is that IT professionals can take better care of themselves in many ways. From mental wellness to physical health, the following seven tips will prove especially useful for overworked tech workers:

Take fish oil supplements

When it comes to the tasks of the typical IT team member, brain power means everything. With this in mind, consider taking a daily omega 3 fish oil supplement, preferably when eating breakfast, lunch, or dinner. Long associated with preventing mental decline and boosting brain performance, Omega 3 supplements are a great way to keep your mind sharp at work. Doing so minimizes mistakes and enhances your ability to problem solve and troubleshoot common IT problems.

Remember to stand and move

The global obesity epidemic is partly due to increasingly sedentary living. We generally spend more time sitting at desks than standing and moving. IT professionals are especially vulnerable to the health risks associated with reduced activity. While regular exercise is essential for overall health and wellness, focus on taking ten minutes out of every half hour to stand up and move around. Your boss might not like it, but health experts agree it’s the best way to stave off the harmful effects of spending so much time sitting down.

Wear blue light glasses

Studies show no meaningful reduction in screen-related eye strain when wearing blue light-blocking glasses. However, many IT professionals continue to swear by them to reduce eye strain, prevent headaches, and improve focus. Moreover, a recent study by

the University of Houston found a marked improvement in nighttime melatonin levels for those wearing blue light glasses during the day. While the jury is out regarding the true health benefits of blue light-blocking lenses, we suggest giving them a try to see if they make a difference in your personal well-being.

Do meal prep on the weekends

Long hours solving your company’s IT problems and developing preventive solutions means many temptations to order and eat quick-service carry-out meals from local restaurants. Not only is this habit expensive, but it’s also typically unhealthy. We suggest IT professionals do meal prep on the weekend to bring healthy meals with them to work. That way, you can access nutritious food without all those added salts, sugars, and preservatives.

Take advantage of employer-provided healthcare

If you’re an IT professional working full-time for an organization, chances are you have excellent employer-provided healthcare. Get the most out of it! Visit your doctor on a regular basis, get your prescriptions refilled on time, and never hesitate to seek medical attention when feeling unwell.

Limit exposure to maxed-out volume

Many IT professionals love to listen to music while they work. It helps them stay focused. But prolonged exposure to high volume damages the ears, leading to hearing impairment over time. With this in mind, IT professionals must keep the volume reasonable while listening to their favorite tunes. No sick beat is worth having to get fitted for hearing aids later in life!

Get outside

Like most office workers, IT professionals spend most of their day indoors at their desks. That dramatically reduces the amount of natural vitamin D you receive courtesy of the sun. Coupled with the poor air quality in most office buildings, make a point to get outside as often as possible. Consider combining this task with your obligation to stand up and walk around.

Virtually every organization on the planet relies on IT professionals to perform critical tasks. These men and women get paid well because they work hard. Unfortunately, that makes it hard for them to stay on top of their health and wellness. The good news is,

with a few habit changes and improvements, IT experts will be on their way to healthy living and feeling better too.
